Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
