The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
