From Praise to Rage: Right-wing Response to Epstein File Release is Mixed.

Right-leaning responses to the limited release of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive censorship portray former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.

Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Hyperbole

Administration representatives justified the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the redaction process.

Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections

While the former president's identity and likeness appear in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded increased openness.

“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.

Some Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure

However, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President loyalists swung firmly in support of the administration.

The release—from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their faces obscured.

But a few are not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled certain rightwing figures to launch the attack.

“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely accused President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”

Former President Campaign Issues Statement

Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing those documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.

“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.

Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Muted

Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud demands for transparency that came before the congressional vote to enact a law mandating the documents' release.

The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were given physical binders of files that contained no previously unseen information.
