The Video Platform Provides Users Control to Reduce Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Timelines

Users will soon have a updated setting that allows them to lessen the volume of AI-created content appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the company disclosed that it now features over 1 billion AI-generated clips.

Trial and Implementation

This change is undergoing trials over the coming weeks before a widespread launch. This development aligns with a rise in content created by AI, spurred by recent AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that almost a tenth of the fastest-growing video streams on a popular video site exclusively feature content made by AI. A considerable share of this output is considered “AI slop”, a term for substandard, factory-style content that is often illogical or surreal.

“We know from our community that numerous viewers like content made with AI tools, from digital art to educational videos, and we intend to give people the power to increase or decrease of that, based on their own choices,” commented a spokesperson.

Scale of AI Content

The platform shared that there are now over a billion videos on its network labeled as artificially created. Collectively, more than 100 m pieces of content are submitted to the platform each day, making AI content a relatively small portion of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Viewers will be capable of limit or boost the amount of AI content they view by accessing the content preference setting in the platform and selecting “AI-generated content”. Other topics that are already be controlled under the filter include current affairs, style, cosmetics, and movement.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its policies oblige users to identify “realistic” artificially created content, and it forbids malicious deepfakes of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is not labeled can be taken down under its community policies.

In addition, the service will from now on attach an “AI-made” tag to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or identified by an collaborative effort for spotting content made by AI. This measure is aimed to stop users from attempting to bypass the labeling process.

AI Literacy Programs

The company is furthermore introducing a $2m educational fund for professionals and organizations to produce informative material about ethical AI use. This program will support charitable organizations dedicated to teaching coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has defended its content review process, during debate over proposals to make redundant hundreds of safety staff in the UK. TikTok is expected to eliminate a significant number of roles in its content moderation team in the UK capital, with worker representatives and online safety experts raising concerns that humans are being replaced by machine-led review.

A company official stated that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but AI can protect employees by filtering out the most distressing content before it has to be seen by humans. The platform announced a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content reviewed by human moderators over the previous year due to reliance on its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to combine staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s highly necessary to reduce exposure to harmful content as rapidly, which is where a significant AI assistance is proving valuable process content quickly.”
